Frans Timmermans at Columbia University

On September 18, 2017, Frans Timmermans addressed a crowded and engaged room at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He discussed ongoing challenges to freedom of expression in Europe and how to tackle them. This talk was particularly timely given moves against freedom of expression and the media in Hungary, Poland and Turkey, as well as worries about dis/misinformation campaigns throughout Europe.

As First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans is responsible for Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Adam Tooze, Director of the European Institute, gave opening remarks. Anya Schiffrin, Director of SIPA's Technology, Media, and Communications Specialization (TMaC), moderated the discussion.
