Step 1: Degree Progress Check-In
In order to ensure that you are on track to graduate, there is a mandatory check-in the semester before your anticipated graduation. Students should complete and return the European History, Politics, and Society Checklist to the Associate Director and copy the MA Faculty Advisor.
You should complete the Checklist with your progress thus far and indicate in which semesters you will complete your remaining requirements.
Please find below the deadlines to submit the Checklist and confirm your degree progress:
- April 29, 2022, for October 2022 graduation
- September 16, 2022, for February 2023 graduation
- January 20, 2023, for May 2023 graduation
Language Requirement
As part of the program checklist, you will be asked whether you have fulfilled your language requirement. If you have not already confirmed your language requirement with the Associate Director, please review the information on the Language Requirement page for next steps.
Step 2: Thesis Registration
Please review the Thesis page for more information.
Deadlines to submit the prospectus and thesis registration form to the European Institute:
- September 16, 2022 to register to write in the Fall 2022 term
- January 20, 2023 to register to write in the Spring 2023 term
- May 5, 2023 to register to write in the Summer 2023 term
Step 3: Confirm Program Requirements
Complete and return a final version of your European History, Politics, and Society Checklist to the Associate Director and copy the MA Faculty Advisor. The MA Faculty Advisor must confirm that you have met all the program requirements, including the Language Requirement.
Step 4: Notify Registrar & GSAS
You must notify the University Registrar and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) of your intention to graduate using the Application for Degree or Certificate. More information is available on the Registrar's website.
Please be mindful of the deadlines for notifying the Registrar & GSAS.
Step 5: Thesis Submission
Please review the Thesis page for more information.
For your advisor to submit the thesis evaluation form and for you to deliver paper and electronic copies to the Associate Director at the European Institute:
- October 5, 2022 for October 2022 graduation
- January 25, 2023 for February 2023 graduation
- May 3, 2023 for May 2023 graduation
Step 6: Graduation!
Degrees are awarded in October, February, and May of each academic year. GSAS does not have graduation ceremonies for October or February graduates. Every graduate, regardless of degree conferral date, is invited to participate in the May ceremonies: GSAS Convocation and University Commencement.
For example, the following graduates are eligible to participate in the May 2023 ceremonies:
- October 2022 graduates - Eligible.
- February 2023 graduates - Eligible.
- May 2023 graduates - Eligible, as long as they have already filed for an application for the MA degree with the Registrar. Application and deadlines on the Registrar's website.
- October 2023 graduates - Eligible, as long as they have submitted a program-approved Participation Petition form to the GSAS Office of Student Affairs by the deadline. Petition will be available on the GSAS Convocation website.
Note: Participating in Convocation and Commencement does not constitute conferral of a Columbia degree.
Eligibility information and ceremony registration can be found on the GSAS Convocation website. Please take note of the registration procedures and deadlines for each ceremony.
The European Institute asks graduating students to complete a short Graduating Student Form.
